According to a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal Survey, there is a lack of confidence in the next generation’s ability to attain personal freedom and success in their lives. Their questions included:
Do you feel confident that you will have a better life than your parents?
- Confident 21%
- Not Confident 76%
In another survey, respondents were asked this simple question:
“What holds you back most at seeing greater results?” The possible answers were:
- Lack of Clear Goals
Of these four possible answers, what do you think was the first place result?
Distractions! At 56%, it was more than five times higher than the second place answer. We live in a world full of distractions that hinder us from staying focused to achieve results in our lives.
The current environment floods us with tremendous amounts of information every day. Many individuals cannot process that information and then and are unable to apply it into their goals and objectives. That is where the Focus Life Institute can help you by providing knowledge about yourself and equipping you to fulfill your personal assignment and destiny to become the change-agents to positively influence society!
What would life be like if you could stay focused on a goal or objective and see it through to completion? The word focus means to direct your attention, meditate or to consider. Below I have summarized the definitions of the words focus and meditate.
FOCUS: directed attention (attend – to apply one’s self, to apply the mind)
MEDITATE: to engage in mental exercise for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of awareness.
According to Kyle Robbins, author of 10 Habits of Highly Unfocused People, he states that distractions are everywhere. Some of them are obvious, but others lurk in every cell phone, conversation, and task. Each time focus moves from one task to another, there’s a lag in time to truly focus. The human brain cannot truly multi-task, so attempting to do too much actually hurts productivity. Are you too easily distracted? The best way to improve is to be aware of the problem. Take note of distractions and understand the toll they take on your productivity. Practice makes perfect.
Many of us have conformed to specific patterns or models in our lives and have lost the ability to stay focused to accomplish our specific, personal goals or objectives. What type of patterns have you created in your life that is affecting your ability to focus?
One pattern that you might need to implement in your daily routine is to create a focused environment a few times during the week. Your environment or atmosphere dictates your actions. By developing a focused environment, you will begin to concentrate on specific areas within your life that will enable you to achieve your goals.
You need to step away from your daily activities to a quiet place and begin to examine the process it will take for you to understand how to possess your objectives and life-long dreams. This should be a place where you can rest & enjoy this focused time.
I believe we have the ability to change our environment by getting focused. I want to help you to begin to create a new environment, an atmosphere of success within your life. The word atmosphere is a surrounding influence or environment. What if you could begin to get focused on ways to change your environment?
The word environment means the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded. It is amazing to me how the social environment, the culture where an individual lives, plays a major role in how they respond to different situations. The ability to take time planning in a “focused environment” atmosphere can eliminate your response of reacting too quickly or by making an emotional, short term decision that could produce disastrous results.
Examples of a Focused Environment
- Find a Quiet Place – It might be your bedroom, certain place outside in a park or even in your car where you can get alone and shut out the distractions.
- Quiet Your Soul – Your soul is your emotions, will and intellect and many times we are controlled by our emotions. A great suggestion is to find a place of rest where you can quiet your soul from the circumstances of your life.
- Journal Your Thoughts—Get a journal and begin to ponder and think about the areas you need to change and write down your thoughts.
- Share Your Thoughts— Find a friend, family member or mentor that you can trust and share with them your thoughts and ask them for their opinion and guidance.
- Find Peace— Never make a decision when you do not have peace about your decisions. If there is a struggle making a decision, then wait until you have a clear answer before you make the change.
Another way to enhance your ability to focus is the capability to set goals. Studies show that a mere 3% of the population sets goals. That means that 97% of individuals do not have a focused mentality and consequently fail to create objectives. They go through life meeting the expectations given to them by others. Even worse, they go through life living day-to-day, paycheck to paycheck, social encounter to social encounter without any real purpose or sense of contributing to something greater than they are or having a valuable impact in the lives of others.
There was a study done back in the 1950’s at a major university in the east. What they did was to look at the senior graduating class of that particular year. Through a survey, they divided them up into groups of individuals who set goals and those who did not set goals. Thirty years later, they gathered these individuals together. They noticed that those who set goals (thirty years prior) were more productive, had more financial provision, had a greater spiritual focus in their life and had a better relationship with individuals they interacted with — all based on the goals they set. Those who did not set goals were ‘behind’ in almost every area of life including jobs, earning potential, successful relationships, health, etc. So, setting goals and objectives and developing strategies to reach those goals and objectives really does work.
Focus Summary: In order to direct your attention to achieve greater success is to begin to take time in a focused environment.
- Create a quiet, relaxed and focused environment and begin to journal your thoughts for your goals and plans for your life.
- In this focused environment identify a specific goal you can set and list what it will take to achieve it.
